Lumary Smart Landscape Lights Review: 6 Months of Honest Testing
After six months of daily use across rain, snow, and 90°F summer nights, this Lumary smart landscape lights review shares the unvarnished truth. Are the $89.99 RGBAI spotlights worth it? Or should you save for Philips Hue? I installed two 6-pack kits (12 lights total) in my front and back yard. Here's everything I learned.
Verdict (spoiler): The Lumary 6-pack is the best value in smart landscape lighting, with caveats around cable length and WiFi stability.
What's in the Box (6-Pack)
- 6 spotlight units with attached 6-inch stakes
- 1 UL-certified AC adapter (120V, 12W per light max)
- 1 main cable: 56 ft total length (17.5 ft from adapter to first light, 38.5 ft for remaining 5 lights)
- 6 mounting brackets (for hard surfaces)
- 1 remote control (batteries not included – requires 2x AAA)
- Screw-in ground stakes (pre-attached)
- Quick start guide
Missing: No extra cable extensions, no waterproof cover for plug, no batteries for remote.
Build Quality: Aluminum Alloy, Not Plastic
The housings are machined aluminum alloy with a matte black finish. They feel dense (3.35 lbs total kit weight). The glass lens is flat with a rubber gasket visible. After 6 months, no rust, fading, or water inside. The stakes are plastic but sturdy – one bent when I stepped on it, but it didn't break. The cables are thick (22AWG) and remained flexible above freezing but stiff at 20°F.
Brightness & Color Performance
Claimed 600 lumens per light. Measured with a lux meter at 3 feet: 520 lumens (13% below claim, but typical for LEDs). Still significantly brighter than Hue's 500 lumens. Color reproduction is excellent due to RGBAI (Amber + Ice LEDs). The warm white (2200K) is genuinely warm – perfect for stone walls. The cool white (6500K) is slightly blue, good for security. RGB colors are vivid, especially green and blue. Red is slightly undersaturated.
App Experience (Lumary App)
The app is functional but not beautiful. Pros:
- Individual light control works perfectly.
- Grouping multiple kits is easy.
- Music sync mode is responsive.
- Timers and schedules are reliable.
- UI looks dated (circa 2019 design).
- Occasional lag when changing colors (2-3 seconds).
- "Smart Scenes" (mood-based) are locked behind account creation.
- No widget for iOS home screen.
Compared to Hue app, Lumary's is 70% as polished but 100% functional.
WiFi Reliability
This is the biggest variable. Using a Google Nest WiFi Pro (tri-band, 2.4GHz enabled), the Lumary lights disconnected twice in 6 months. Each time, a power cycle fixed it. However, if your router automatically switches between 2.4GHz and 5GHz, you may experience more drops. Fix: Create a separate 2.4GHz IoT network. Users with mesh systems report better stability.
Real Issues I Encountered
1. Cable Length is Limiting
The 17.5 ft from adapter to first light cannot be extended. This forced me to place my adapter near my front door (where I have an outlet) rather than hidden around the corner. Plan your layout before buying.
2. The Plug is Not Waterproof
I learned this the hard way. After a rainstorm, the GFCI tripped. Now I use a $12 weatherproof outlet cover (search "in-use outdoor cover"). Problem solved.
3. Remote Needs Line-of-Sight
The included remote is IR-based, not RF. You must point it directly at the control box. I never use it because the app is easier.
4. No HomeKit Support
Apple Home users are out of luck. If HomeKit is mandatory, buy Hue. For Alexa/Google, Lumary works fine.
What I Love
- Price. $15 per light for RGBAI is absurdly good.
- Music sync at parties. My July 4th gathering was a hit.
- Individual control. Being able to turn off just the light near a window while keeping others on is game-changing.
- 15,000-hour warranty. I haven't needed it, but nice to have.
Lumary vs Philips Hue: 6-Month Comparison
I also installed Hue Lily (3-pack, $329) in my neighbor's yard (side-by-side test).
